A chinook salmon spawns in a side channel of the North Fork Nooksack River that recently was restored by the Nooksack TribeThe Nooksack Tribe’s successful efforts to restore salmon habitat on the North Fork Nooksack River were covered by the Bellingham Herald:

Chinook salmon are already taking advantage of a new stretch of spawning channel on the north fork of the Nooksack River that was improved in the past year through a project overseen by the Nooksack Indian Tribe. (more…)

Tribes Release Watersheds Report

OLYMPIA (January 24, 2005) – The treaty Indian tribes in western Washington, in cooperation with the state of Washington, have produced the most comprehensive report to date on the status of salmon habitat in the region. “State of Our Watersheds” compiles decades of data collected by tribes, and state and federal agencies, painting a picture of watersheds across western Washington.

“Tribes have always lived on watersheds, along the rivers,” said Billy Frank Jr., chairman of the Northwest Indian Fisheries Commission. “We have always had a watershed perspective, and this report tells the story of salmon habitat from our perspective.”

Governor’s Office Appoints Soicher To Forest Practices Board

OLYMPIA (Feb. 7, 2003) — Alan Soicher, a Van Zandt resident with over 10 years of experience in natural resources management, has been appointed by Governor Gary Locke to the Washington State Forest Practices Board.

“It is a great honor to serve on the Forest Practices Board,” said Soicher. “The forests of Washington State are a tremendous natural resource. I look forward to working with the Forest Practices Board to find the right balance for our forested watersheds.”
