From the Nisqually Land Trust, the Puget Sound Partnership honors George Walter, founder of the land trust and long time tribal employee:
Since 1979, as the Environmental Program Supervisor for the Nisqually Tribe, George has helped create and negotiate many of the agreements, large and small, that have gone into achieving that protection.
He also helped draft the Nisqually Watershed Management Plan, in 1985, to guide the watershed’s protection of its land and water, and played an important role in the expansion of the Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge and the restoration of the Nisqually River estuary, the largest estuary restoration on the Pacific Coast.
George has worked with major partners throughout the watershed, including Tacoma Power, Centralia City Light, Washington State Parks, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and Fort Lewis (now Joint Base Lewis-McChord), to set aside or otherwise protect essential habitat at a landscape scale.
