Kitsap Sun: Chico Creek’s Chum Salmon Move in Early

The Kitsap Sun reported on this year’s earlier -than-usual return of chum salmon to Kitsap County’s Chico Creek,  the most productive salmon stream in the county.

From the story:

“Chum are spawning throughout the system,” said Jon Oleyar, a biologist with the Suquamish Tribe who keeps track of the local salmon migration. “This is the earliest they have been in Chico Creek for the past eight years.

“The fish look healthy,” he added, “and they’re a good size.”

Chico Creek, the most productive salmon stream in Kitsap County, drains from a vast watershed containing more than 16 miles of stream habitat — including Kitsap Creek, which flows through Kitsap Lake; Wildcat Creek, which flows through Wildcat Lake; and Dickerson Creek, which originates in forestland west of Kitsap Lake.
