Forest Practice Technician – Quinault Indian Nation

Quinault Indian Nation is hiring for the position of Forest Practice Technician

Forest Practice Technician performs a variety of technical tasks relating to fish habitat and forest practices within the boundaries of the Quinault Indian Reservation (QIR). They assist with field data collection for other QDNR Environmental Protection Sections as needed including cultural resources, environmental quality and wildlife.

Primary Functions:
• Reviews forest practice applications proposing operations within the Quinault Reservation.
• Inspects on-going forest practice activities for compliance with approved forest practice applications and applicable Tribal laws.
• Monitors compliance during in-water work activities as well as after activities are complete.
• Participates in Interdisciplinary Team process for on-Reservation.
• Maintains complete files of accurate field notes, daily work journals, and operator performance.
• Assists Biologists, Scientists and Managers in QDNR Environmental Protection Department as necessary to assure compliance with applicable laws and regulations, and in monitoring or survey activities.
• Monitors research activities, collects data and samples, makes observations, and calculates and record results.
• Participates in regular meetings as requested.
• Builds and fosters effective working relationships with others.
• Enhances professional growth and development through participation in seminars, educational workshops, classes, and conferences.
• Performs other duties as required or assigned.

• Collects data and field samples in remote areas, on steep terrain, and in inclement weather conditions.

Ability to:
• Work independently in the field.
• Conduct field sampling in remote and steep terrain and in inclement weather conditions.
• Recognize and describe adverse implications of natural resources decisions/practices.
• Communicate effectively with co-workers across disciplines, with operators, agency staff and the public, both orally and written.
• Prepare comprehensive and concise reports; conduct work with attention to detail.
• Learn the identification of fish, wildlife, and native plant species.
• Analyze situations and adopt appropriate courses of action.
• Interact and maintain good working relationships with individuals of varying social and cultural backgrounds.
• Make solid decisions and exercise independent judgment.
• Work in a fast-paced environment and meet deadlines.
• Use office software and industry-related applications.
• Use Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, and punctuation.

Minimum Qualifications
• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Two (2) years’ experience in directly related field plus a demonstrated ability and willingness to improve career advancement
• Valid driver’s license is required.

Work is generally performed in an indoor/outdoor setting with occasional exposure to dust, fumes, airborne particles, and/or allergens; natural weather conditions; hazardous materials; hazardous/moving equipment or machinery; excessive noise; and frequent use of protective clothing, equipment, devices, materials is necessary. Work may involve physical risks such as falling, slipping, tripping, and working in significantly hazardous logging conditions. Overnight travel, evening, and/or weekend work is occasionally required.

The successful candidate must be able to comply with the Federal Drug Free Workplace Act, hold or have the ability to obtain a valid Washington State driver’s license, and have and maintain the ability to be insured under QIN automobile insurance.
