Port Gamble S’Klallam Concerned About Proposed Dock in Home Waters

Dec 17th, 2007 • Category: NWIFC Blog

The Kitsap Sun printed this story about the Port Gamble S’Klallam Tribe’s concerns about a proposed dock to be built within its home fishing waters.

PORT GAMBLE – There’s a stalemate over a project in Port Gamble Bay.

On one side of the North Kitsap waterway is Olympic Property Group, which sees a proposal for a 160-foot dock as a key to its economic vitality and a help to a temporary state effort.

On the other side is the Port Gamble S’Klallam Tribe, which believes the dock will cause a degradation of the bay’s environment and harm — or end — culturally and economically vital shellfishing in the bay.

In the middle is the state Department of Transportation, waiting to see if the two sides can strike a deal before the end of the year.
